Chapter 14

“The sensor signal is not on my radar. I am unable to locate its position. The tracking device has not yet fully gestated.”

Mildred’s authoritative middle-aged voice filled the room. The deep violet colour of one of her three flames dominated her small oval body, casting a serious determined glow.

“Can you tell me anything, anything at all?” Aleksandr growled.

“All I can tell you is that she is alive and her vital signs are good,” Mildred replied. “There is a steady heart rate but her external body temperature has fallen. She is very cold. But as long as Marianna does not realise you have planted this tracking chip in her and attempt to remove it, her body heat will allow it to gestate and soon it will become fully functional. When it does we should be able to locate her exact position and bodily state. Where and how did you attach it sir?” Mildred asked.

Aleksandr did not answer. The memory of where and how he had placed a tracking device on Marianna was still vivid in his mind. Watching her sleep that night when he had finally found her, he had been filled with such fear that he might lose her again that he decided there and then to place a tracking device in her, just in case, just in case she rejected him and ran, and to protect his heart if she did. And Marianna did not know he had done it, because he had not told her. He had not felt able to risk it. His heart was still mending and it could not take much more. The tracking device was as much to save him as it was to save her.

Aleksandr began to pace the room while he spoke to Mildred. Mildred was placed in an open alcove on the curved wall in front of Aleksandr’s wide desk in the governing chamber. Her flames were bright and their glow spread out in a wide semicircle. She shone like a fire in an open hearth, with the same intensely comforting source of energy, but with the same ability to burn if you forgot their power.

After Aleksandr had ordered that Mildred’s “core” be replaced, he had left instructions that she should then be relocated to his main governing office. It was an act he had meant to fulfil before, but things had just got in the way. With the passing of time Mildred had been gradually forgotten and replaced by new improved models. But all of the new models were just an update on the main prototype from which Mildred had been constructed. Clement had made many improvements to her, some seen and some unseen, but with his death the secrets of Mildred’s advanced state had been lost with him, and even a part of Mildred had seemed to die too. She had become so humanized, had learned so intuitively how to be more than the inert organic matter she was programmed in, that Mildred it seemed, had learned what it meant to be broken hearted.
